[10] Pirates in Oregon?? + Pirate Geography
The Goonies off the coast of Oregon
Because pirates were more likely to frequent faraway places like the Caribbean, where piracy flourished around Port Royal, Jamaica, Tortuga (Haiti), and Nassau, Bahamas, it seems pretty unlikely that pirates actually frequented the shores of Oregon, especially during One-Eyed Willy's naval battle with the British armada. Looking a bit into the history of Oregon and whether there were any connections with piracy, the one thing I could find was a murky bit of history regarding Sir Francis Drake and some pirate-like activity near Manzanita, Oregon. According to a few of his journals, Drake and his crew had rested somewhere along the west coast of the United States. His journal entries talk about a foggy place, and some of the maps drawn have indicated a bit of a resemblance to Whale Cove around Depoe Bay or the Nahalem Bay area, although this continues to be highly debated today.
